WoodmenLife has learned that certain bad actors have been using emails that look very similar to legitimate WoodmenLife email addresses in an effort to impersonate WoodmenLife employees. In a recent incident, these malicious individuals used WoodmenLife’s name and likeness to pose as fake hiring managers as part of a “phishing" scam targeting job seekers.
WoodmenLife is committed to being a responsible corporate community partner, and we want you to be on alert and take steps to protect yourself. Always think twice before clicking on links contained in emails, and when in doubt, either call us at 800-225-3108 or visit our website by manually typing www.WoodmenLife.org into your browser.
Legitimate emails from WoodmenLife will always use “woodmenlife.org,” and never another address, including one ending in “.com,” or “.net.” We will never ask for money or personal information (such as a Social Security Number or bank information) through email, and we do not contact customers or potential hires by Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or other digital messaging services.
Further, when we contact potential hires about job opportunities, any email will come from the recruiting team using a “woodmenlife.org” email address, and you will never be asked to pay money as part of the hiring process. When in doubt, job applicants should always contact us directly.
Here are some common indicators that an email you receive may be a scam or phishing attack:
It communicates a tremendous sense of urgency.
It pressures you into bypassing and/or ignoring security measures.
The message sounds too good to be true.
Contact is made through a digital messaging service like Facebook, WhatsApp, or Google Chat.
You receive a request to send money, buy gift cards, or purchase cryptocurrency.
Phone numbers and other information do not match information you have on statements or is listed on the company’s legitimate website.
The “from” email address does not exactly match the company name. For example, emails are coming from a slightly different spelling of our website (woodmenllfe.com rather than woodmenlife.org).
We encourage you to be vigilant, so you don’t fall victim to bad actors trying to play on your emotions. If you ever question whether an email is legitimate, don’t respond to it. Instead, call the company directly.
